ILEANA GARCÍA ‘MAGODA’

B. 1985, Mexico City

García Magoda's practice explores the body, the dream, and the earth. A body that aches, reading in the flesh the memory inscribed by lineage. The dream as the imaginary plane where symbol and premonition sketch out realities. A garden understood as a living system, where earth is mother, processor, womb, and generator.

On raw cloth, acrylic and pigments, García Magoda builds from chaos toward gesture —from the uncontrollable to the expressive— inhabiting the threshold where melancholy and beauty are one and the same.

Analogous to the garden-system, she conceives her works as living specimens born from dream to emotion to canvas: they exist, and they transform. In the garden, organic material is managed to regenerate the soil and activate the system. In the studio, painted material is reconstructed into bodies that, together, generate systems.

Magoda learns from the earth to understand her own nature: to grasp defect, pain, and to accept the sacred cycles of life.

Ileana Magoda (b. 1985, Mexico City) is a painter whose work emerges from a lifelong relationship with chronic pain. Born with a spinal defect. She grew up on the outskirts of the city in a working-class household, studied Graphic Design at UNAM and worked for over a decade as an art director in television advertising and as the creative force behind Smurphy, an electronic music project of international presence. When declining health ended both careers in late 2020, she returned to painting — a practice she had left behind since childhood — and found in it both language and purpose. Her work is rooted in the lived experience of pain.
