Feelings of an American Futile Dream

Mexico City, 2022

Feelings of an American Futile Dream, 2022.
Acrylic and blood on unstretched cotton, 140x203 cm | 55x80.7 inches

Some years ago, I embarked on the American dream, it could be said that I failed...
With this series of pieces I try to express the feelings one experiences when emigrating. Traveling with hope, entering into a different territory and culture, discovering oneself through a new language, finding oneself within another context, all the while having to demonstrate that you deserve to be there.

Leaving the territory that defines us, the cathartic transformation one goes through when crossing a border, gaining an opportunity to redefine ourselves, reaching another land only to realize that everything we truly are we carry within, that countries are nothing more than bureaucracies, that a geographical location does not really matter since the first territory we inhabit is the body itself and as we begin to inhabit it any other territory fades into the background, as the experience of inhabiting oneself with acceptance and diligence eclipses even the most beautiful land.
